Have you ever met someone who always seems to be thriving, no matter their circumstances? They’re resilient, adaptable, and completely unfazed.
These people don’t just have technical skills or an advanced degree. And they’re not simply “lucky” (even if it looks that way from a distance).
Nope. They’re in on the secret.
People who thrive typically have (drumroll, please)... Meta Skills!
So, what are those?
Meta skills are higher-order abilities that help you adapt, evolve, and excel in any situation.
Heard of them before? Honestly, the concept was new to me, too. That’s why when I heard Dr. Will Ramey break it down on his podcast, I knew I had to bring him on!

In this week’s episode of The Orange Butterfly Effect, Dr. Ramey, a former U.S. Army Officer and Bronze Star recipient, corporate leadership coach, keynote speaker, and Executive MBA Adjunct Professor at Drexel University, shares how we can foster our meta skills (hint: practice, practice, practice) and move from simply surviving to fully thriving.
But what does this mean for you?
This episode reminded me of advice from one of my dear friends and mentors, Don Schalk. Don taught me to use my shower at the end of the day as a moment to review and reflect. Because of him, I ask myself three questions every single night:
What did I do well today?
What didn’t I do well today?
How can I be better tomorrow?
So here’s my challenge for you this week: Are you ready to flex your meta skills? Tonight, carve out a moment of self-reflection and ask yourself those same three questions.
Behind the Mic
It’s comforting to remember that we can choose to thrive. This episode also made me think of Dr. Angela Duckworth’s New York Times bestseller, Grit. Have you read it? If so, you know exactly what I mean. If not (and if the psychology of thriving interests you), add it to your nightstand.
Spoiler alert: She shares that the secret to outstanding achievement isn’t talent, but a special blend of passion and persistence.
In other words, it’s not about talent or luck. It’s about something deeper. Something I like to call the belly burn.
The insights from Dr. Ramey and Dr. Duckworth left me feeling hopeful this week... hopeful that no matter where we are, we always have the choice to thrive.
Tune in. Take what you need. Pass it on. ✨
