Train for Life with Jerry Moyer

We’re all athletes. Maybe not on the field, but in the arena of life.

Whether you’re sitting on the sidelines, overtraining, or somewhere in between, welcome to the team!

In this episode of The Orange Butterfly Effect, Jerry Moyer, former professional soccer player, college soccer coach, author, and performance expert, shares how he shifted his mindset around what it means to train for life.

Jerry has been on his personal improvement journey for decades, and he’ll be the first to admit he’s still on the ride. He doesn’t claim to have it all figured out… but "he’s a 62-year-old guy who genuinely loves life." Why? You’ll find out.

Instead of chasing peak performance, Jerry shares how he learned to focus on optimal performance. Why optimal? Because it’s sustainable. It’s lifelong.

Jerry is the author of Time to Fly: Finding the Courage to Take Flight, 32–0: Lessons Learned from an Undefeated Season, and most recently Ed & 8: Cleared for Takeoff. Across his books, you’ll notice a common theme: when you’re not sure what to do, just fly.

But what does this have to do with you?

What’s your “I am so happy and grateful that I am…” statement? You know the one...the vision of that moment in your life when you’ll finally feel like you’ve “made it.” Are you taking steps toward it every day? Even if it’s just an inch closer?

Jerry’s message as both an athlete and a coach is simple but powerful: all you need to do is start. Start small if you have to, but just start.

So here’s my challenge for you this week: create your I am so happy and grateful that I am… statement. Write it down. Keep it in your wallet, tuck it behind your phone case, or put it somewhere you’ll see it daily. Look at it every day for the next week.

Hey, guess what? You started.

Behind the Mic

Jerry was my very first guest ever, and now, he’s my first returning guest. There’s something special about meeting people who are seekers. If you’re here, maybe you are too. Always looking for something more. We usually find our way to each other.

What I admire most about Jerry is that he isn’t seeking “more” in the sense of collecting accolades or accomplishments. He’s seeking more of himself: more knowledge, more growth, more awareness. And in doing so, he inspires others to look inward, too. Because when you’re happy inside, you can say something as simple and as profound as, “I’m a 62-year-old who loves life.” Isn’t that a beautiful thing to be able to say? To love your life?

It starts with loving yourself. And Jerry isn’t afraid to say that out loud.

Practice makes progress.

Let’s keep training for life, together.

Tune in. Take what you need. Pass it on. ✨
